Tobacco firm denies YouTube marketing

“British American Tobacco (BAT) has denied claims it uses video-sharing website YouTube to market its products, as research released today from Otago University claimed.   The study examined the video results for a YouTube search for five leading cigarette brands and found at least 71 percent of the videos had content which was supportive of smoking.”

This is despite the obligation in 168 countries to ban all mainstream tobacco advertising, under a World Health Organisation (WHO) agreement which went into effect in 2005.”

Online help for addicts

“Two websites launched yesterday are using “raw, authentic and uncensored” video testimonials from former addicts to help people off drugs. DrugHelp.org.nz and MethHelp.org.nz are part of a three-year, $1 million project by the Drug Foundation and Ministry of Health and have recovering addicts tell their own stories and give information on treatment options and practical advice about dealing with withdrawal.”

US warning over ‘Lady Gaga’ contact lenses

“Opticians say American teenagers are risking their eyesight by wearing a controversial contact lens to make their eyes look bigger. The lenses are illegal to sell in the US because they haven’t been approved by federal health officials, but they can bought online from foreign websites.”

Modernising Medicare by providing rebates for online consultations

“A re-elected Gillard Labor Government will modernise the health system and deliver better health services by providing Medicare rebates for online consultations across a range of specialties for the first time. …Federal Labor’s $392.3 million investment will provide:

  • $250.5 million to make Medicare rebates available for online consultations across a range of specialties, providing around 495,000 services over four years to rural, remote and outer metropolitan areas.
  • $56.8 million to provide GPs and specialists with financial incentives to participate in delivering online services.
  • $50 million to expand the GP after hours helpline and include the capacity for the helpline to provide online triage and basic medical advice via videoconferencing.
  • A $35 million fund to support training and supervision for health professionals using online technologies.”

US FDA warns pharma firm about Facebook promotion

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned a pharmaceutical company that its use of the Facebook Share button to promote a cancer-fighting medication violates FDA requirements for disclosing information about drugs. The FDA, in a letter sent to drug-maker Novartis Pharmaceuticals July 29, tells the company that its use of Facebook Share to promote Tasigna is incomplete and misleading.”

Patients Find Kidney Donors on Facebook

She also was one of a few people who have been able to meet their medical needs through Facebook.  Taylor, 53, had been in renal failure for eight years and in desperate need of a kidney.
