Gay Ont. man loses blood donation negligence suit

“A gay Toronto man who concealed his sexual history on a blood donor questionnaire and was sued for negligence by Canadian Blood Services has lost in Ontario Superior Court.  In a decision released Thursday, the court sided with CBS in its suit against Kyle Freeman for “negligent misrepresentation.”  The court said Freeman did not have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms defence against the claim of negligence.”

Row over NHS porn for IVF couples

“NHS trusts have been criticised for supplying pornography to couples undergoing IVF. Think tank 2020health.org said the use of porn to help men produce sperm samples promoted “adultery of the mind”.  Survey results, revealed yesterday, show 33 NHS trusts offer pornography in their IVF clinics. One trust – the Royal Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust – spent £7,350 on a media suite for its clinic for the viewing of pornography, the study said.”

NHS pays for ‘virgin’ ops

“The controversial surgery – costing up to £4,000 a time – is performed in private clinics.  The op is called a hymenoplasty.  In the past five years, the NHS has paid for 116 of the operations. Thousands more women pay for the surgery privately every year, according to doctors.  NHS bosses said that they only fund the op for “physical and psychological” reasons.  But private medics said that it is often being performed to preserve the modesty of women who have had sex before marriage – but do not want their new husbands to know.”

Judge rules for gay couples

‘No gays’ in aged care: study

“The vast majority of aged-care providers do not understand that older homosexual people may be afraid to reveal their sexuality and instead believe they have never had any gay or lesbian residents, Australian researchers have found.  Nearly 90 per cent of aged-care providers who participated in the first Australian survey into their attitudes to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people said there were none in their residence, a study by Curtin University and the GLBTI Retirement Association found.”

Military surveyed about gay soldiers

“More than 400,000 members of America’s armed forces are being asked by the Pentagon how they would feel about serving alongside openly gay members and reservists.  The confidential survey asks how unit morale or readiness might be affected if a commander is openly gay or lesbian. It also asks how members would feel sharing a room, bathrooms and open-bay showers in a war zone with gay or lesbian soldiers.”

Doctors declare ‘gay cure’ therapies harmful

“The annual meeting of the British Medical Association has declared that therapies to ‘cure’ gay people of homosexuality are harmful. The body met in Brighton yesterday and more than two-thirds of doctors present backed a call for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and other mental health standard-setting bodies to reject the treatments and ban their use in codes of practice.”

Transsexual to get legal aid to help fight NHS over breast surgery row

“The 40 year-old, formerly Raymond Harwood, has been granted legal aid to sue health chiefs in Essex.  She had £60,000 of surgery last year but was refused the £8,000 for breast implants to complete her transformation. The South East Essex Primary Care Trust said it has no money available for the operation. Now Miss Lee, from Southend, Essex, has been granted legal aid to challenge the decision in the courts.”

Former LA cop surrenders over Craigslist bestiality ads

“A former Los Angeles police officer who posted online ads looking for women to have sex with his Labrador Retriever has surrendered to authorities after being charged with conspiracy to commit sexual assault and fraud, the Los Angeles Times reports.   The Orange County district attorney’s office said Kevin Michael Sianez, 53, turned himself in Tuesday after a warrant for his arrest was issued when he did not show up for a court hearing.”
