NT problem drinker register ‘flawed’

“The Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS) says the Territory Government’s plans to establish a register of problem drinkers to address chronic alcoholism sounds like a flawed idea. The Government plans to spend $6 million to create a register that will alert take-away outlets when a known problem drinker tries to buy alcohol.”

Doctor con unhealthy

“The case of dodgy doctor Balaji Varatharaju wasn’t just a matter of a man with psychological problems committing a crime.  It was a case of the NT Medical Board being conned in the most embarrassing and dangerous way because of the Territory’s desperate need for medical staff.   Varatharaju treated more than 400 patients over 10 months at Alice Springs Hospital before senior medical staff became suspicious.  Apparently, he was exposed by a single telephone call to the University of Adelaide inquiring whether his medical degree was valid.”

Draft Public and Environmental Health Bill 2010 (NT)

“The Department of Health and Families is pleased to release the draft Public and Environmental Health Bill 2010 for public comment.  This draft Bill represents a significant step in public health legislation reform and seeks to replace the outdated current Public Health Act 1952 and subordinate regulations with a modernised flexible legislative framework for monitoring and regulating public and environmental health in the Northern Territory. …it is requested that submissions be received by Friday 23 July 2010.”

Fake doctor guilty of assault

“A Singapore national who used fake qualifications to work as a doctor in Alice Springs has pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault of a patient in the NT Supreme Court.”

Aboriginal health records get cyber treatment

“The Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance in the Northern Territory has welcomed a $1.5 million funding boost to expand e-health services to remote Indigenous patients.  The service has been trialed over the last four years and enables data detailing people’s medical records to be stored at a central location.  AMSANT chief executive John Paterson says the service works well in the Territory where there is a large, transient population.”

“The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) concluded its 29th meeting in Canberra today. The Prime Minister, Premiers, Chief Ministers and the President of the Australian Local Government Association were joined by Treasurers for the meeting. COAG, with the exception of Western Australia, reached an historic agreement on health and hospitals reform – the establishment of a National Health and Hospitals Network. This represents the most significant reform to Australia’s health and hospitals system since the introduction of Medicare, and one of the largest reforms to service delivery in the history of the Federation. …In addition, a package of $5.4 billion in reforms and investment will provide…”

Health Impact Assessment of the Northern Territory Emergency Response

“The HIA predicts that the intended health outcomes of the NTER (improved health and wellbeing, and ultimately, life expectancy) are unlikely to be fully achieved through the NTER measures. It is predicted that it will leave a negative legacy on the psychological and social wellbeing, on the spirituality and cultural integrity of the prescribed communities. However, it may be possible to minimise or mitigate these negative impacts if the Australian and NT governments commit to and invest in taking the steps necessary to work in respectful partnership with the Aboriginal leaders and organisations responsible for the governance of the prescribed communities in the NT.”

Enquiry into claims regarding Leprosy testing on Aboriginal Children in the Northern Territory between 1920 and 1960

“The report provides information on the final stage of a detailed investigation of the treatment of Aboriginal people with leprosy in Kahlin Compound (Darwin) in the early to mid 1900s. This phase of the project incorporated a search for relevant information through public and non-public archives, and individual patient/client records. In addition, the project included discussions with people identified as possessing knowledge of potential relevance.”

Coronial outcomes to be referred to Child Protection Inquiry

“The findings and recommendations of Coronial inquiries into the deaths of two children, who passed away three and five years ago respectively, will be closely considered by the Department of Health and Families (DHF) and the operational recommendations (paragraph 270 nos. 9-14, and paragraph 158 respectively) used to inform its submissions to the Inquiry into the Child Protection System in the Northern Territory.”
